[Joseph Smith] The Saints in Far West agree to build a relatively modest house of the Lord, with Bishop Partridge as treasurer for the venture. Elder Goodson in England, in direct violation of Joseph's orders, reads D&C 76 publicly, "which turned the current feeling generally, and nearly closed the door in all that region." (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 2:505.)
