I wrote the following letter to Ass[istan]t US Attorney John M. Zane Panguitch 8/29/[18]92
["]My Dear Sir: I desire to draw your attention to the cases of two of my good Republican friends whom I understand are to be arraigned in the 2nd district court. B[isho]p Andrew P. Schow of Escalante [Utah] I believe is an innocent man of the charge against him and I should regret very much to see him taken away from his ward this fall where he would be an influential worker in the Republican cause at the supreme moment. The other case is that of Seth Alvin Johnson as I understand, charged with adultery. His transgression came about in this way as I understand; he had been engaged to the young lady for years with the confident hope that they would someday be allowed to marry, but the Manifesto of Pres[ident] [Wilford] Woodruff put an end to their hopes and they yielded to the tempter and sinned so grievously. What ever mercy you can extend to him under the circumstances without violating your official trust will be appreciated by me as a personal favor.
He is a live Republican worker and is needed by our party in Garfield Co[unty]. B[isho]p Schow s case I believe is all spite work perhaps by someone who had been dealt with by him for his church fellowship.["] [Francis M. Lyman, Diary]
