Smith is born in Sharon, Vermont to Joseph Smith, Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith. Vermont residents recall that Smith, Sr. told them the young Joseph was born with a caul (a sign of good luck), and that Smith, Sr. "intended to procure a stone for [him] to see all over the world with".
