Ernest Wilkinson telephoned yesterday to say that he had received a letter from Dallin Oaks suggesting that a formal reading committee be set up to read the second and third volumes of the BYU history which will deal with the administrations of Franklin Harris,6 Ernest Wilkinson, and President Oaks. I have no doubt that this was brought about by the feeling on the part of Boyd Packer and perhaps Neal Maxwell that President Wilkinson might be over-zealous in defending his own point of view on certain issues that confronted the [LDS] Church Board of Education under his administration. Elder Maxwell and President Oaks had conferred with Dr. Wilkinson ... They had suggested that someone ought to read what he writes, but Dr. Wilkinson reminded them that they had promised him that nobody would censor his work if he undertook it. Of course, Dr. Wilkinson on his own has been sending chapters to me and President Oaks and Neal Maxwell know this...
