[Brigham Young]
I say the Congress of the United States have no more right to Legislate for us than we have to Legislate for them... The doom of the United States is sealed their die is cast I have run my legs off almost to try to save the Nation. I have warned them of the troubles which are now upon them and they will come to pass until the end. The president of the United States in his message stepped from the Colorado to Nevada, and did not name Utah and I was very glad of it. We shall have to Legislate for ourselves or nobody will do it for us... I don't think the Lord was pleased with us this last time. If we had taken Gen Connor and cut him and bound him out to a gimlet maker and sent the soldiers back to California I think the Lord would have been much better pleased with us than he is now. If Gen Connor crosses my path I will kill him so help me God. He must keep out of my path. ... He wishes to kill the Saints, take our grain and destroy our Daughters and this I will not permit him to do.
