The Church News describes Major Russell L. Rogers as the "first Mormon astronaut" who is scheduled to orbit the earth as "one of six Dyna-Soar (X-20) astronauts." At this time Clifford I. Cummings is also a LDS director of the Lunar Program at CalTech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Rogers dies in the 1967 crash.
