[William Clayton]
A very singular incident transpired this morning, which I will here record. The circumstances occurred with Chauncy G. Webbs team as they were ascending the hill near where we camped last night. ...
"As we were rising a sharp, but short hill, a ring which fastened the stretchers to the tongue of the wagon gave way, and our lead horses being under good speed, drew the lines from the driver, and started off on a fast gallop. They had not proceeded but a few yards, when the whipple trees, from some unseen cause, were instantly detached from the traces. ..."
This circumstance caused the hearts of the brethren to rejoice, and all who were acquainted with it could see that the angel of the Lord freed the horses from the whipple trees; because being fastened by steel springs, it was utterly impossible for them to become unloosed by accident; and the fact that the four became unhooked at the same instant, proves beyond a doubt that some unseen power was present to perform such an act so speedily. ...
This is not the only instance that the brethren have had, that the Angel of the Lord guards us by night and by day, and the hearts of the brethren are made to rejoice continually. ...
