Joseph, still in hiding, comes to see Emma, who has been sick (she had been baptized in the Mississippi River several times for recovery). Joseph invites John F. Boynton, an apostate apostle, to dinner. While dining, Deputy Sheriff Pitman arrives to arrest the Prophet. Boynton detains Pitman in the front room while Joseph runs out the back through a corn patch and hides in Bishop Whitney's home. Pitman rips the house apart looking for Joseph.
