[[Calls on [former apostle Moses] Thatcher at home and told him that business at Brigham Young College was languishing; would he resign his position as per written request of President W. W. [Wilford Woodruff]? Said no, that he preferred to be put out than to voluntarily resign a trust Brigham Young Sr. had given him. Brigham Young Jr. asked that as W. W. had the same authority on the premises that the deed of trust gave Brigham Young Sr. would not W. W.'s request be all sufficient? Thatcher replied perhaps, but he would rather be put out. "Then I handed him Pres[ident] Woodruff written document dispensing with his services which stated that best interests of College demanded, and Bro[ther] M. W. Merrill will succeed Moses. All was done amicably."]]
