[Brigham Young]
Any man that has a woman and if he has not power to control one, he cant control a second - you must live in peace with the first one to begin with ... it is the privilege of a man to have more wives than one, but no man has a right to take a wife until he comes to me ... I never would have undertaken such things until Joseph gave me a commandment - do it - there is one principle I abhor it as the gates of hell - poor girls want to go to the west - men will get them into their wagons - cuddle around them and the first you know is they creep into bed and commit adultery, that is a damning sin ... in the judgment you will see them [wives] taken away and given to them who have an abundance - be careful that you have not them taken away ... it is the privilege of a woman to say to a man I love you, I want to be sealed to you.
