Bodyguard Joseph W. McMurrin is shot twice in the stomach and nearly killed by U.S. deputy marshal Collins while he was seeking to arrest polygamists. Collins claims that four men with clubs attacked him in the alley, and one tried to shoot him. Seven witnesses support his account, and McMurrin's club is found at the scene. The court finds the marshal innocent of attempted murder. McMurrin is an active Mormon with a history of convictions for assault and battery going back seven years. He is the first Mormon bodyguard to be shot and becomes a general authority in 1897.
