[Heber J. Grant]
[At meeting of apostles, Presiding Bishop, and church attorneys:] 3rd recommendation'books be placed in hands of Auditing Committee. ...
F. M. Lyman felt the books of the Church should be placed in the hands of the Auditing Committee.
Franklin D. Richards did not want as one of the Auditing Committee to be placed in possession of the books. He did not want any knowledge of the books in case he is called into the Courts.
Moses Thatcher was opposed to one man in this quorum knowing where the Church books were and that information being kept from others. He wanted the books in the hands of the Auditing Committee. He would rejoice when the day came that there were not so many secrets among us.
Joseph F. Smith did not want to know where the books were, nor did he want any of his brethren to have this information for fear of their being placed in contempt by the Courts. He thought we had better pass recommendation No. 3. ...
Erastus Snow felt that the Committee should be in a position to report to the people. If we excuse ourselves from being prepared to Audit the books then we must place the responsibility upon Prest John Taylor or his immediate associates. He was not desirous of getting the secrets of his brethren. ...
Motion to adopt #3 was then carried. ...
I did not like the spirit manifested today by Bro Cannon he was angry that the brethren had talked as they had regarding the books, or I misjudge him.
Bro Franklin raised no objections to the motion the minute Bro. Cannon said he had none & it looked to me as though Bro Cannon did not want the Auditing Committee to get the books and when he found it could not be avoided then he said there was no objections. Had he spoken an hour sooner I would have felt more faith that he really did want the Committee to get the books.
