[Joseph Smith] According to David Whitmer, when Martin Harris has problems raising the money to pay for the printing, Hyrum suggests that they go to Canada and sell the copyright. Hyrum asks Joseph, and Joseph receives a revelation that agrees. When Hiram Page and Oliver return from Toronto, having been unsuccessful, they ask Joseph why the revelation failed, and he says, "Some revelations are of God; some revelations are of men; and some revelations are of the devil." (Brigham H. Roberts, A Comprehensive History of the Church (6 volumes) 1: 162-66.)Mass meetings are held in Palmyra to boycott the printing of the book, and Grandin becomes so nervous about his money that he suspends printing. Joseph returns to Palmyra to urge Martin to pay the printer in full, but Martin's wife is opposed, so he refuses (2)

[Apostle Anthony W. Ivins Diary] The time between my arrival home & Jan. 7th I have been in council with my quorum considering various matters which came before us. The question of plural marriages was discussed & it was decided that in cases where plural marriages were entered into prior to 1904 the parties to such marriages shouldn't be molested unless they be cases where the interests of the Church are involved. Where men are in prominence in the Church who have taken plural wives since Pres. Woodruff manifesto (they) be removed where it can be done without giving unnecessary offence. (1)

LDS-Church-History: Dreams

LDS-Church-History just completed its second topical analysis.  Actually, the first was  a general history of the church.  The second was on the history of tithing. 

The next topic will cover Dreams.

Dreams were an important component of early Latter Day Saint spirituality. The Book of Mormon equates dreams with visions, and many in the church attached a high level of importance to their dreams. 

Joseph Smith Sr. had a series of dreams that were very meaningful to him and Lucy Mac Smith.  Joseph Smith Jr. had dreams throughout his life starting before his prophetic role.  Some evidence that will be presented here suggests his visions of Moroni may have been through dreams.

Joseph Smith, William Clayton, John Henry Smith, Anthon H. Lund, Franklin D. Richards, Anthony W. Ivins, Rudger Clawson and Wilford Woodruff recorded dreams in their personal journals, and will be presented here.  Wilford Woodruff in particular recorded numerous dreams (over 150) many of them with recurring themes.

Additionally dreams from various apostles and prophets including Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball  George A. Smith, John Taylor, Orson Hyde, Joseph F. Smith, Daniel H. Wells, Merriner W. Merrill, and Spencer W. Kimball will be presented.

A bishop in Spanish Fork had a series of dreams resulting in what is known today as the Dream Mine.  Events surrounding the fascinating story of the Dream Mine will be included.

In the evening the party who went to Vermont to dedicate the Monument at the Birth place of Joseph Smith about 75 persons were present. We had an elegant meal, some good singing and reciting and speaking. (1)

[Apostle Abraham H. Cannon Journal] The question was asked if Temple work could be done for people who were once in the Church, but gradually grew cold and moved away. The answer was "Yes." This, of course, when they have not sinned against light and truth. By special permission of the President cases have even occurred of living wives who are in the Church being sealed to their husbands who died out of the Church. The question of forgiveness for the sin of adultery was considered at some length, and examples were given of the views entertained by the various Presidents who have led the Church. All consider it a most grievous sin, but the strictness with which the law of excommunication has been enforced has varied. There seems to be more leniency in this regard at present, and some of the brethren seem to feel that this laxity is doing injury among the people by causing them to look upon this sin as being of no very grave import. Bro. Snow said he expected to see the day whe

Joseph Smith was harassed in the vicinity of Mentor, while on his way to Painesville, by two non-Mormons. They yelled to him "Do you get any revelations lately?" and added some "blackguard language" to the insult. Possibly the men were referring to allegations that Smith had commanded Mormons Davis and Denton to kill Mentor resident Grandison Newell, in the name of the Lord. Smith noted in his history of the harassment that he had "never laid a straw in their way," thus responding that their abuse of him was unwarranted. [LDS Church History Vol II, p. 323] (3)
