Apostle (and U.S. Senator) Reed Smoot proposes to Apostles that "all new cases [of polygamy] should be excommunicated from the church and that action should be taken at once. Also that the church should not retain any man taking a plural wife after the Manifesto in a church position where people were asked to support him" The Apostles refer to this as "wholesale slaughter" and recommend a quieter approach. [David O McKay] [at meeting of the Presidency and Apostles in the temple:] Remarks by President J. Reuben Clark, Jr. "I think that the minutes of this meeting ought to carry our message of love, trust and confidence in the President of the Church on this, his natal day, that we love, we trust him, we believe the Spirit of the Lord is with him, and that the warmest prayers we have in our hearts are that his life may be preserved in years as long as they are happy to him. When I wished him well this morning, I wished him many happy returns of happy years. He has been a great inspiration to us and the people. He has been a great leader. He enjoys the confidence of the people. We rejoice in that confidence. There is nothing that is good that we do not wish and pray will be bestowed upon him by our Heavenly Father, that He will continue in the future as in the past to give him His inspiration, His wisdom, and the revelations of His messages of love and appreciation and conf
idence to you, and made these prayers in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Even so, Amen." Following President Clark's spiritual message, I said that I wanted to take this opportunity to express to them, my beloved brethren, the deep love that I have in my heart, and gratitude for their loyalty and for the unity of spirit that pervades the Council. I told them that I wished to express appreciation to my two counselors--loyal, faithful, true servants of the Lord; that I appreciate their support; I appreciate their wisdom and what they do for this Church and the Presidency as members of the First Presidency of the Church--President Clark for his wisdom, his willingness to do things which sometimes cause him physical inconvenience; President Moyle for his willingness to work night and day, and their united support as expressed at this meeting so beautifully by President Clark and the Brethren, by President Joseph Fielding Smith and all the members of the Twelve, for the fee
ling of brotherhood mentioned in the opening prayer and the prayer at the altar. (2)
