[Heber J. Grant]
I am delighted to tell you that upon my return home our associate and dear Stephen L. came to my office and said: 'Brother Grant, I feel that I have made a mistake, and whatever you decide to do with regard to my talk at conference, whether to publish it or not, will be all right with me.'
I rejoice beyond expression that Stephen has taken this position. I expect to have a talk tomorrow with Brother Ivins (this being a holiday) and we shall come to a final decision as to wether to publish the sermon or not, but I feel sure that we cannot publish it unless we put a statement alongside of it which would make it worse than though it was left out. I feel it would be the better policy, unless I change my mind, to let the matter drop, and if it doesn't appear in the Conference Pamphlet it will soon be forgotten that the speech was made.
[Richards had told the First Presidency and Twelve that he would resign as apostle rather than apologize for his general conference talk which says church is putting too much emphasis on Word of Wisdom.]
