[Rudger Clawson]
At 5:30 p.m. we—Brother [Joseph W.] McMurrin and myself—had an interview with a young sister by the name of Nancy Hunt, who had been charged with the crime of incest with her father. The latter is now in the penitentiary, having been convicted in the courts of the land of said crime and sentenced to a term of ten years. From all we could learn, the evidence adduced pointed strongly to his guilt. The girl now comes to the church, claims she is innocent, and asks for justice. She gave birth to an illegitimate child, but claims that she was drugged and ravished by some stranger. Her story is very loose, and rather convinces one that she is lying. The matter was taken under advisement.
It was later decided to give Nancy Hunt a church trial, and the bishop of her ward—Bp. [Levi C.] White—was instructed to institute early proceedings in the case.
