[William Clayton]
During the day we passed some United States officers on their way to see President Young and the Council. We afterwards learned that they profess to be going to the authorities of the church by order of the president of the U.S. to raise 500 volunteer Mormons to defend Santa Fe, but the feeling amongst the brethren is that they are spies sent to learn our movements and watch us. It is evident the U.S. are afraid of us and perhaps the serpent will send a flood after us but the earth will help us.
