The First Presidency and Twelve met at the Temple at 11 A.M. ... Elder Brigham Young related the substance of a conversation he had on his way home from San Juan County [Utah] with Navajo Indian agent David Day. Mr. Day expressed the wish that our people would rent and work the lands in that County which had been deeded by the government in severalty to the Indians. His reason for this was that the Mormons were the only people who in their dealings with the Indians had taught them morality, and had not seduced the women, nor taught the natives to drink and gamble.
