[Joseph Smith] W. W. Phelps writes to Joseph that Gov. Dunklin will restore the Saints to Jackson County, but that he has no constitutional power to protect the Saints once they have been restored to the county, and the mob is swearing to kill them if they return. (There is evidence that this becomes the underlying motivation for the march of Zion's Camp in May 1834-to protect the Saints once they have been restored, not to restore them by force, as is commonly supposed.)
