Meeting of First Presidency and Apostles. ...

On motion of Bro[ther]. John Henry Smith, the duties of visiting and looking after the Papago Indians in Maricopa [Arizona] Stake were assigned to President William R. Hakes, and the sum of $1,000 a year was allowed him, as mission maintenance, instead of $1,200 allowed to the late Bro[ther]. Rogers. In his letter Bro[ther]. Hakes intimated that the Mission could now be sustained for less than the usual appropriation, hence the reduction. ...

Pres[iden]t. [Joseph F.] Smith brought to the attention of the Council that Sister Susa Y. Gates had been invited to become a delegate to the international Council of Women to beheld at Copenhagen [Denmark]. As Sister Gates had not the means to pay the expenses of such a trip it was a question with her whether she could accept the invitation or not, but intimated that if the Deseret News would furnish transportation to new York, for which she could supply the paper with correspondence; and if the Relief Society and Young Ladies Association each gave her $100., she thought she could make the trip. President Smith desired the mind of the brethren in regard to the matter.

It was the mind of the Council that the Presidency let the Societies named, also the Deseret News know that they had no objection to their aiding Sister Gates in the manner indicated.
