Joseph Smith performs the illegal marriage of Newel Whitney and Lydia Goldthwaite who was still legally married to another man. He states, "I have done it by the authority of the holy Priesthood and the Gentile law has no power to call me to an account for it." This is his most clear statement to date of theocratic ethics.
