Apostle Brigham Young Jr. writes in his journal: "Pres. Smith denied that any plural marriages were taking place to his knowledge in the Church either in the U.S. or any other country. It is thoroughly understood and has been for years that no one is authorized to perform any such marriages." This is said at a meeting of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve half of whom had married new plural wives or had performed such marriages for others.
