[Heber J. Grant]
Attended meeting in the Temple Annex which lasted until a little after 10. President Joseph F. Smith was present and gave a most interesting and powerful talk. I had never heard before that the Prophet Joseph [Smith] and his Brother Hyrum [Smith] and John Taylor did not have their garments on in Carthage Jail at the time that they were killed. They had been threatened with being mobbed, and had been persuaded to take off their garments before they went to Carthage Jail [Illinois]. When Willard Richards was solicited to do the same, he declined, and it seems little less than marvelous that he was preserved without so much as a bullet piercing his garments at the time of that awful tragedy when the prophet and patriarch were killed and brother
Taylor wounded, as I remember it, by four separate shots.
