[Brigham Young Jr.]
Pres[ident] Wilford Woodruff spoke for 30 m[inutes] in clear loud voice and his ideas were clear & forcible. He denied that the church had ever been in politics. The prophet Joseph Smith said "If I were the emperor of the world I would protect men in their worship of God so long as they respected the rights of others, in every nation upon the earth." Brigham Young, John Taylor nor himself had ever attempted, in any form, to unite church and state. Those who stated to the contrary were stating that which is untrue before God angels and men. ... Pres[ident] W. W. & wife shook hands with four or five thousand people.
