[Rudger Clawson]
The clerk read a letter from Thos. E. Bassett, in which he said that they had concluded to change the name of the Fremont Stake Academy [Now BYU-I] to that of the Smith Academy—in honor of Jos. and Hyrum Smith—if agreeable to the council. Some of the brethren expressed the view that the said academy was hardly of sufficient importance to bear the name of the Prophet and also that an action of this kind now would detract somewhat from the contemplated memorial building to memory of Joseph Smith. Upon motion of Apostle Jno. H. Smith it was decided that we recommend the name of the Ricks Academy.
The clerk read a letter from Pres. A. W. Ivins of the Juarez Stake, who wrote concerning the missionary work in the city of Mexico and vicinity. Much good, he said, was being accomplished, and the cause prospered.
