Paid taxes. to Bagley in the General Business office, for county & State purposes. but refused to pay the taxes on the City & Town of commerce. [Walter Bagby was the Hancock County tax collector. JS refused to pay taxes assessed on behalf of Commerce, "there being no such place known in law; the city & town of commerce having been included in the city plot of Nauvoo."]
