Utah law allows whites to "purchase" Native Americans from Indian or Mexican slave-owners in order to prevent these captives from being killed. Purchaser must "immediateìy go" before county selectmen or probate judge who will "bind out the same, by indenture for the term of not exceeding twenty years." Mormons are prohibited from owning Indian slaves, but can own African-American slaves.
