On the subject of the annexation of Texas, Joseph offered an opinion, "Don't let Texas go out. Our Mother[s] and the daughter[s] of the land will laugh us in the teeth. And if these things are not so, God never spoke by any prophet since the world began." (Willard Richards, Joseph Smith Diary, in The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 325)
President Tyler brought Texas into the Union in 1845, after the Prophet's death.
