[Thomas A. Clawson]
"Joseph Smith [III] and Frederick M Smith of the Reorganized Church are in attendance (Sic) at conference and will hear some strong testimonies of the truth of this work. I hear from common rumor that Joseph Smith [III] is here at the instance of Kearns and Cannon all his expenses being paid, the hope being that there will be a split in the Church and he will step in and gather them into the Reorganized Church. Another report is circulated to the effect that Joseph Smith [III] hoped to be appointed a receiver for the Church &c. All of which if their (Sic) is any truth whatever in them are the very highth (Sic) of folly."
