[Rudger Clawson] On Saturday afternoon it was finally decided by the Presidency and some members of the Twelve that Apostle Reed Smoot refrain from allowing his name to be put forward as a candidate for the U.S. senatorship. And in view of the fact that President McKinley and the national Republican committee favored Thomas Kearns, it was decided that so far as it might be proper, the brethren would support him for the place.
