[Hosea Stout Diary] Thursday 9 Sept 1858. This evening two men Rucker and Beal got into a fuss as is said about gambling affairs[.] Beal shot Rucker through the body and recieved a shot in the face each recieved another wound. Rucker died immediately, the fate of Beal is not known but his wound is dangerous.
Some two Companies of U. S. troops passed this week through the city en route for the Humbolt River to protect the mail from indians, who are troublesome.
