[William Clayton Writings] The proposition of the high council for payment of the judgment against Joseph Smith, Henry W. Miller, George Miller, and Hyrum Smith by the United States was that a bond would be signed to cover the sum of $5212.49 1/2 by responsible individuals in four equal annual installments with interest and to secure the payment of the bond by mortgage of Illinois real estate worth double the amount of the debt.
