[General] An LDS missionary records in his journal Harold B. Lee's answer (given in the temple) to the question, "If the "second endowment" existed and "if so, what connection does it have with the Holy Spirit of Promise, and who receives it and why and how," Lee's answer: "You don't have to worry. You've received all the ordinances necessary for exaltation....It is a special blessing given by the President of the Church to men who have been called. It is not necessary to receive it, however. You have all the endowment you need to be exalted."

[Joseph Smith] Clay County residents resolve to ask that the Mormons leave their county. Up to this time, Mormons in the county had not voted on local affairs nor been accused of any crimes. Residents assert that the differences between themselves and Mormon would not allow them to peaceably reside together. The resolution encourages the Mormons to settle in Wisconsin.

[General] Musa Bey Alami in company with daughter of Jordanian ambassador to United States expresses gratitude to President David O. McKay and to BYU for their joint donation of large heard of cows for Jerico Dairy Project in Jordan. By 1996 400 Jordanian boys have graduated from project's dairy school, and 160 are enrolled in project which is providing mile to 111 Palestinian and Jordanian villages. Alami says that "there has not been anything done in Jordan, in spite of the millions of dollars spent there that has met the success of this gift." Church called L. Burt Bigler, LDS bishop and dairyman from Jordan, Utah, to select cattle, transport them to Jerico, and supervise dairy in Kingdom of Jordan.

[General] Brigham Young's office journal records: "Br. [Samuel] Murphy called upon the President and mentioned to him that his eyes were bad and his stomach out of order. The President told him to take care of himself, and to wear a good shade to his eyes, and take some medicine to cleanse his stomach. The President noticed the effects of the first dose of lobelia he took, the lobelia poked the phlegm, but not his food. he observed persons have formed a prejudice against lobelia, because their stomachs were not properly prepared with warm drinks until they ware in a perspiration before they took the lobelia, if there is no disease the lobelia will not cause a vomit but will pass off the same as any thing else taken into the stomach, but if there is disaese then the lobelia will cause a puke."

[John Nuttle Diary] [DEL: at home all the day an :DEL] (sic) up most of the night waiting on John who is failing fast Dr Murphy told me this morning that professionally he could do nothing more for him. I consulted Prest Taylor as to calling other doctors he said no that all had been done that could be. I called on Bp Thos Taylor & other Elders who met prayed & administered to him he seemed much better but afterwards failed again. Prest Taylor called us & blessed him he continued to fail until 5.20 when he expired all our efforts having failed. The Lord seemed to want him -- Bro Hyrum Taylor took the matters in hand to call on Bp Taylor & Sister Jos E Taylor as to the funeral service -- My wife Sophia very much effected my own feeling also much wrought upon.

[General] An editorial in The Vermont Chronicler discussing Mormon revelation noted: "Our readers will recollect a similar delusion which raged soms [sic] ten years ago in the case of the 'Pilgrims.' Their Prophet - Old Isaac, as he was called - came from Canada with a few, and encamped in Woodstock. Here outraging not Christianity only but humanity, by their absurd opinions and absurder practice - by taking the assertions of their infatuated leader for divine revelation, ... they induced many decent people who should have known better to join them, under the empty promise of being led to the holy land..."

"From the resemblances between the Pilgrims and Mormonites in manners and pretensions, we should think Old Isaac had re-appeared in the person of Joe Smith, and was intending to make another speculation...."

"They are daily receiving new revelations - sometimes by letters dropped from the skies, written in a round Italian hand, and in letters of gold; which, if it is attempted to transcribe them, vanish."

[General] Counselor J. Reuben Clark advises Mormon "against your assuming as truth the most of the criticism you see leveled against Hitler and his regime in Germany. I visited Germany twice within the last half-dozen years . . . Hitler is undoubtedly bad from our American point of view, but I think the Germans like him." Because of such statements, federal intelligence agencies investigate Clark in Utah as possible pro-Nazi subversive.

[Temple] This evening from about 9-30 to 12 O.C[lock], my wife and I attended to the second part of the ordinance of second anointings. We besides the ordinance itself sang "We thank thee O God for a prophet," conversed concerning our duties to each other and children, read from John XII:1-8 verses, read the Rev[elation] on the Eternity of the Marriage Covenant, Section 132. We dedicated [the] room [in our house] for the purpose of this meeting [and] closed by singing: "Oh my father thou that dwellest." Anna was mouth in [the] preliminary prayer [and] I gave the dedicatory prayer and the benediction. The spirit of the Lord was with us and we felt nearer together than usual: were much encouraged in pressing onward in an endeavor to succeed in life. Phelps flee for their lives after receiving a written death-threat signed by Danite chief Sampson Avard, two members of the First Presidency, and eighty other Danites. This is two days after Sidney Rigdon announced that the church will now fulfill the commandment to treat dissenters as "salt" to be "trodden under the foot of men."

Dear Brother: applications are, as you are aware, being constantly made for the privilege of having women sealed to their husbands who have heretofore been sealed to other men who were not their husbands. Similar applications are being made in the cases of sealing children to parents who have heretofore been sealed to men who were not their natural fathers. I have been unofficially informed that when such cases are plain, and when the applications are at harmony with the teachings given at the last April Conference, the rule in the Temple should be to proceed without application to President [Wilford] Woodruff. If this be the decision of the First Presidency, I would be obliged if I could be so informed officially by the placing of a plain "yes" or "no" upon this sheet. [General] David Whitmer writes to the KANSAS CITY JOURNAL to correct some items in a recently-published interview: "I did not say that Smith used 'two small stones' as stated nor did I call the stone 'interpreters.' I stated that 'he used one stone (not two) and called it a sun stone.' . . .My statement was and is that in translating he put the stone in his hat and putting his face in the hat so as to exclude the light and that the light and characters appeared in the hat together with the interpretation which he uttered and was written by the scribe and which was tested at the time as stated."

There could not have been less than 2,500 people present, and as well appearing as any number that could be found in this or any state. Mr. Smith preached in the morning, and one could have readily learned, then, the magic by which he has built up this society, because, as we say in Illinois, "they believe in him," and in his honesty. [Temple] We are informed that the rules of the [United States] Navy do not permit its men to wear any other clothing than that provided by the Navy, and it is quite possible, therefore, that our brethren who have received their endowments who join the Navy may not be permitted to wear the temple garment. In that event there would be no wrongdoing on their part in ceasing to wear the garment while serving in the Navy, as it is ceasing to wear the garment from choice that constitutes the wrong. [Abraham H. Cannon Journal] Another case of rebaptism. "After meeting, Bro. Bloesch, the president of the branch, expressed the desire to be rebaptized. He is guilty of having intercourse with another man's wife, but he asked forgiveness for this, and made everything right as near as possible. 100 years ago today - Jun 9, 1911

The Hotel Utah was built as a cooperative effort by the business and ecclesiastical leaders of the Salt Lake community to bring everyone together. It succeeded. Shares in the venture were sold and the hotel's prominent location on the corner of South Temple and Main Street, previously the site of the Bishop's Tithing Office and the Deseret News, was donated by the LDS Church. After two years of construction and a $2 million price tag, the Hotel opened 9 June 1911 "in a blaze of splendor" with a grand party for 500 of Utah's notables.

Tegucigalpa Honduras (Under Construction) Temple; Location: Tegucigalpa, Honduras; Announcement: 9 June 2006; Groundbreaking: 12 September 2009 by Don R. Clarke; Notes: Ground was broken in a small ceremony on 12 September 2009 after a new site was selected. Previously ground had been broken on 9 June 2007 by Spencer V. Jones, excavation was halted because of opposition from Tegucigalpa city officials and citizens, who felt the temple would overshadow and block the view of the Catholic Our Lady of Suyapa Basilica on adjacent land. After negotioations failed to resolve the issue, the church announced on Wednesday, 28 January 2009, that out of respect for the city officials and citizens, the church would relocate the temple.

Reuben Clark tells annual conference of youth and their leaders: "When I was a boy it was preached from the stand, and my father and mother repeated the principle to me time and time again. They said, 'Reuben, we had rather bury you than to have you become unchaste.' and that is the law of this Church." This doctrine continues in the church and is included in all editions of Bruce R. McConkie's great work Mormon Doctrine under the heading "Chastity."

SALT LAKE TRIBUNE story that, contrary to recommendation of her department and college, BYU has fired English professor Gail Houston for expressing feminist views off campus. In support of this decision, university spokesman notes that 5 percent of her student-evaluations complain that Houston's courses in English literature do not offer "gospel insights" and are not "spiritually uplifting," even though 90 percent of student evaluations rank her highly. In Oct the American Association of University Professors begins investigation of this action in terms of due process and academic freedom.

At the regular meeting of the First Presidency and apostles on Thursday last, it was learned that a rule existed in the Logan temple, established by President John Taylor at the opening of that temple, permitting endowments to be given on behalf of deceased children who had attained the age of eight years before their death. At the opening of the St. George temple[,] this age was fixed by President Brigham Young at fifteen, and is still in force there, and the same rule was adopted by and is in force at the Salt Lake temple. That uniformity may obtain in all the temples, [and] I give it as my opinion that the age fixed by President Young should be adhered to, and this became the sense of the council by formal action. In 1833 Joseph Smith announces a revelation appointing Sidney Rigdon as his "spokesman." Joseph confers the Melchizedek priesthood for the first time. Although the office of Elder existed prior to this it was not considered an office of the Melchizedek priesthood.

[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] Called at the Gardo this AM Had a long chat on the political situation. John H[enr]y Smith, FS Richards, CW Penrose, and others there. After our chat Brothers Cutler and Jennings Manager and Secy of the sugar Co came in and we had a long chat on the condition of that business, Brother Cutler reported his trip to San Francisco and he was well pleased with the outlook for our business. The main thing was that we need about $150,000 before we would have any sugar for sale.
