[Rudger Clawson]
Elder Clawson ... Remembered that during his incarceration in the penitentiary none of the brethren—not even the late President Snow—could foretell the outcome—and surely there was no one to predict that fair Utah would speedily come into the union of states. ...
Elder [and Senator] Reed Smoot said that while absent from home he always thought of his brethren. ... A big effort is being made to disfranchise our people. ... Many of them are very friendly. A number of the senators simply wanted to know if I were a polygamist, and when I affirmed that I was not, they said that they were satisfied and would stand by me. The coming question will not be polygamy, for they want to prove that all who go through the temple are disloyal to the government. When I called to see President [Theodore] Roosevelt, he came across a crowded room to shake hands with me. Received me warmly and bade me welcome to Washington. ... I cannot tell you just what the president said to me for that
would be contrary to the generally accepted code of honor regarding interviews with the president of the United States, but it was a shameful affair. Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming will play an important part in the next presidential election....
The tables were then spread with bread and wine and the sacrament administered, Elder Jno. W. Taylor being mouth in offering the sacramental blessing. As usual it proved to be a very enjoyable occasion. ...

Elder Hyde remarked that he read in one of the newspaper[s] concerning the passage of an act in one of the certain states to prohibit the citizens from killing crows because they eat up all the filth and carcuss from of[f] the earth, thereby tending to preserve the health of the people. But offer them a piece of clean fresh meat and a crow will not touch it for he has no appitite for it.
He had often thought that there was [a] very great resemblance between the priests of the day and these crows. For they were continually picking up all the dirt, filth, and meaness of the [Mormons?], feasting on it [as] if it was a precious morsel. But offer them any good and sobriety /from/ among the Mormons, they have no appetite and will turn away from it. I think for the same reason the Legislature lets the crows live. We ought to let the priest live, gather and eat up all the filth and rubbish from the Mormon people that they may be healthy.
Dined at Sophrona's and soon as we arrived [I told] Elder Hyde, "I am going to offer some corrections to you." Elder H[yde] replied, "They shall be thankfully received."
[Joseph said,] "When he shall appear we shall see him as he is. We shall see that he is a Man like ourselves. And that same sociality which exists amongst us here will exist among us there only it will be coupled with eternal glory which glory we do not now enjoy."
14 John 23 "The appearing of the Father and of the Son in that verse is a personal appearance. To say that the Father and the Son dwells in a man's heart is an old Sectarian notion and is not correct.
"There are no angels who administer to this earth but who belong or have belonged to this earth. The angels do not reside on a planet like this earth, but they reside in the presence of God, but on a Globe like a sea of glass and fire." 'Sea of glass before the throne &c.' where all things are manifest past, present, and to come. The place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummin. This earth in its sanctified and immortal state will be a Urim and Thummin for all things below it in the scale of creation, but not above it."
Related the Dream written on page 3d, Book /B/. Interpretation by O[rson] Hyde: "Old man [is the] Government of these United States, who will be invaded by a foreign foe, probably England. U.S. Government will call on Gen[eral] Smith to defend probably all this western territory and offer him any amount of men he shall desire and put them under his command."
[Joseph said,] "I prophecy in the Name of the Lord God that the commencement of bloodshed as preparatory to the coming of the Son of Man will commence in South Carolina. (It probably may come through the slave trade) This the voice declared to me while I was praying earnestly on the subject 25 December 1832.
"I earnestly desired to know concerning the coming of the Son of Man and prayed, when a voice Said to me, 'Joseph my son, if thou livest until thou art 85 years old thou shall see the face of the Son of Man. Therefore let this suffice and trouble me no more on this matter.'"
1 P.M. Attended meeting. Joseph read 5th Chapter of John's Revelation referring particularly to the 6th verse showing from that the actual existence of beasts in heaven. [It is] probable those were beast which had lived on another planet than ours. God never made use of the figure of a beast to represent the kingdom of heaven. Beast [with] 7 eyes [is the] Priesthood.
This is the first time I have ever taken a text in Revelation. If the young Elders would let such things alone it would be far better. [I] then corrected Elder Hyde as in private.
Supped at Bro[ther] Johnson's. [We] expected to start for Carthage, but bad weather prevented [us]. [We] called another meeting by bell. [I] read Rev[elations] between Meetings with Elder Hyde and [was] expounding. During this time several come in and expressed fear that I had come in contact with the old serpent.
Meeting [at] 7 [o'clock] eve resumed the subject of the beast [and] showed very plainly that John's vision was very different from Daniel's Prophecy, [the] one referring to things existing in heaven. The other figure of things on /which/ be on the earth.
Whatever principle of inteligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the revelation [resurrection]. If a person gains more knowledge and intelligence through his obedience and diligence than another he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.
There is a law irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundation of the world upon which all blessings are predicated and when we obtain a blessing it is by obidience to the law upon which that blessing is predicated.
Again reverted to Elder Hyde's mistake &c. The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as mans. The Son also, but the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit and a person cannot have the personage /of the H[oly] G[host]/ in his heart. He may receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. It may descend upon him but not to tarry with him.
What is the meaning of the scripture, "He that is faithful over a few things shall be made ruler over Many? And he that is faithful over many [things] shall be made ruler over many more?"
What is the meaning of the Parable of the 10 talents? Also conversation with Nicodemus, "Except a man be born of water and of the spirit." I shall not tell you?
[I] Closed by flagellating the audience for their fears and called upon Elder Hyde to get up and fulfil his covenant to preach 3/4 of an hour, otherwise I will give you a good whipping.
Elder Hyde arose and said, "Brothers and Sister, I feel as though all had been said that can be said. I can say nothing but bless you."
To B[enjamin] F. Johnson, the 144,000 seal[e]d are the priests who are appointed to administer in the daily sacrifice.

In April of 1843, the Prophet told Benjamin F. Johnson "that he would preach a sermon that day for me, which I would understand, while the rest of the congregation would not comprehend his meaning. His subject was the ten talents spoken of by the Savior, 'unto him that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundantly, but from that hath not (or will not receive) shall be taken away that which he hath, (or might have had.)' Plainly giving me to understand that the talents represented wives and children as the principle of enlargement throughout the great future, to those who were heirs of Salvation".
[Note in the revelation on Celestial Marriage (D&C 132) there are various phrases taken from the parable of the talents such as in D&C 132:44.
Joseph Smith would marry Johnson's sister Almera the next day.]

Final issue of SEVENTH EAST PRESS includes an april-fool insert parodying the DAILY UNIVERSE. Headline is "ROTC reveals plan to deploy MX on campus," The MX story is accompanied by a photo of BYU President Jeffery Holland with other BYU officials in a ground-breaking ceremony. Another article announces plans to implant land mines to discourage students from taking short cuts across the grass. President "Holliday" is quoted as saying, "Sure we're going to lose a few students at first. But the kind of kids who would cut across the grass don't belong here at BYU anyway." In another article about censorship at BYU, Jae R. "Bailiff," academic vice-president, says, "I'm glad you asked me about that. Censorship at BYU is so negligible, the topic need not even be discussed. And I refuse to discuss it any further." An advertisement for "Deserted Book" features "Developing a Personal Relationship with the Apostles, by George Peace and Questions to Gospel Answers, by Egg MacMurrin. An advertisement for the "Desperate News" promises to include fast-offering envelopes in their Sunday edition.

Spencer W. Kimball declares that the place of Mormon women was in the home where they might "fully express themselves as mothers, as nurses to the sick, as proponents of high community ideals and as protectors of good morals." Stating that this had been the position of the Church since the days of Joseph Smith, President Kimball goes on to ask "What more can any woman want for herself, what more could any man want for his wife . . . ?"

I had a long talk this morning with George Albert Smith and his brother Nicholas G. Smith. I explained to George that I was convinced that his defense of his daughter was all wrong and that were was only one thing to do, in my judgment, and that was to stop as far as possible agitation by his daughter and Sister Raille. I hope and pray that George will stop sustaining his daughter. The interview lasted nearly two hours and we went into great detail. I love George Albert Smith and have from the time he was a little boy. I think he is one of the kindest, finest men that ever lived, and his father before him, but he is blind to the faults of his daughter.

... Elder Jno. H. Smith was speaking. He alluded to the extremes to which some of the brethren go in their administration over the saints. He understood that in one ward the bishop required the people to ask forgiveness for the most trivial offenses; in another ward the boys were forbidden to play marbles.
Elder Geo. Teasdale. ... Spoke at some length upon the subject of amusements, of which he was reminded by the fact that at the B. Y. Academy, Provo, they have nothing but round dances in their parties. This, he felt, was improper and remarked that excessive round dancing exerted a bad influence over the mind.... Referred to Elder Smoot's election to the U.S. Senate and said that he recognized the hand of the Lord in it. He will be able to represent Utah affairs as they are. Rejoiced in the union of the brethren of this council. Felt thankful that he had received the principle of plural marriage. When sick upon a mission many years ago, the fact that he had not entered into the practice of this higher law was the one and only thing that worried him.
Prophesied that our enemies would never prevail against us, and we shall be blessed individually with every gift needful for our welfare. Remembered that Brother Brigham, who is sick, was healed upon one occasion by the prayer of faith offered by Pres. Smith and his brethren, but the Lord at this time seems to have something else in view concerning him.
... [Marriner W. Merrill] Had once heard a good man prophesy that the land of North and South America would yet be dotted with temples and work would go on in them until all of Adam's race should be saved that could be. Said that he had no feelings against any living soul. Felt to sustain the Presidency. I want to hold on to the faith and never apostatize. Our families will constitute our kingdoms. If we are faithful, power will be given us to save our wayward children.
Elder Cowley. ... While in attendance at the recent Kanab Stake Conference, he was led by a rich outpouring of the Holy Spirit to speak upon the principle of plural marriage and to defend it. This talk seemed to be necessary because of a spirit of fault finding and complaint against the authorities that had broken out there. ... The hand of the Lord is in it, so that our young people shall not lose sight of the principle. We must, of course, sustain the policies of the church, but cannot change the revelations of God. Plural marriage will stand. ...
[Brigham Young, Jr., whom they visited later:] I would like to say how satisfied I am. I feel that I am going to get well. Some time ago Sister Caroline Holbrook said to me that she was anxious about me and had made it a subject of prayer. The Spirit whispered to her (so she informed me) and said: "Be of good cheer; he will get well." When summer comes, I expect to get out, and I certainly do not anticipate an underground passage at this time. ...

First single women called to serve missions
Amanda Inez Knight and Lucy Jane (Jennie) Brimhall were the first single women called to serve official, proselyting missions" for the LDS Church; they served in England. There are records of more than 200 women serving as missionaries prior to 1898. They often accompanied their husbands. They served in a variety of capacities, including teaching in the mission school in Hawaii, genealogical missionaries, and as missionaries called to study at distant universities. None of these sisters were called to serve in a proselyting capacity and none of them are on the official missionary records of the church. Prior to Knight and Brimhall's calls to proselytize, Harriet Maria Hoursepool Nye was called to proselytize; she was the wife of Ephraim H. Nye who was serving as president of the California Mission.

Elders [George Q.] Cannon, Keeler, Snider, myself took a morning walk, and drew aside where we united in secrit prayer, praying in turn for the gift of the language, for influence with the natives, and the downfall of [Congregational] missionary influence. . . .

As Sidney nears Far West, he meets Henry Root by chance on Turkey Creek, Carroll county. Root offers Sidney "a liberal share" of the profits from the sale of land in DeWitt to Mormons. A few weeks later, Root and Thomas come to Far West and a deal is struck. A few families move to the new site in July, and by October seventy families had gathered, living in tents and wagons as they worked on permanent houses.

The town of Far West begins to develop, with 1,500 Saints, 150 houses, 6 stores, and 1 schoolhouse, which is also used for a church. Later, other Saints will arrive from Kirtland and the population will swell and spill over out of Caldwell into Ray, Daviess, and Carroll counties. Sidney Rigdon builds the biggest house, with double logs; it includes an endowment room. Of the 5,000 people living in Caldwell, 4,900 are Mormons.
