[George F. Richards]
I gave a talk on Patriarch order [and] set right the Patriarch [i.e., Eldred G. Smith], showing that his attitude had been wrong in thinking that the office was his birthright, that any male de[s]cendant of Hyrum Smith, the brother of the Prophet [Joseph Smith], could make the same claim with as much consistency. My talk was characterized by a member of the Presidency as a masterful stroke. Most all of the members of the Twelve told me after the meeting how much they appreciated my appreciation. The Patriarch wept and thanked me.
