[J. Golden Kimball]
I confess myself to be among that number. Bro[ther]. Jos[eph]. F. just placed his son Hyrum in the Apostleship, and to fill another vacancy with a Smith to me, was 'too much Johnson'. The president of his church has the right to do this, and God consents to it, but I question very much whether He approved of it. It is nepotism of the strongest kind since the days of President Brigham Young. The evil effects of family favoritism will be felt among many of our young people and there will be a falling away on account of these things. I confess that I am affected and can see the necessity of not trusting in man. Fathers family is entitled to recognition and the people or many of them feel the same way. We have boys just as good as Geo[rge]. A[lbert]. Smith and very much superior in many ways. From now on a man must be a Smith to get preferment.
