At 8 a.m. attended a meeting of the Apostles in the Temple. ... The letter of Brother B. H. Roberts written to Brother [Richard R.] Lyman was read. The brethren were united in their feeling that Brother Robert's letter was entirely uncalled for, and that it would give comfort to the enemies of our people. None of the brethren had the least objections to Brother Roberts' working for the Democratic party, but we felt that he could do this without making an attack upon one of the Church officials [Apostle and Senator Reed Smoot]. The general feeling was that after having run for Congress himself twice, that it came with very poor grace for him to take the position that no high church official should hold any high office politically.
