Church News feature story: "Incubator for Freedom: Staff of 'BYUniverse' Makes Determined Stand For Hands-Off Policy in Production of Newspaper." That editorial independence lasts sixteen more years at BYU, then falls victim to the conservative reaction against student protests nationally. On 12-19-1968 the Universe published an article in favor of recruiting African-American athletes. BYU president Ernest Wilkinson wrote about this in his diary saying "This argues all the more in favor of our making the student newspaper an agency of our Communications Department rather than a student publication." By 4-18-1969 the Universe ceased to be an independent paper but "nothing would be announced about this new policy"
