(in January) single full-time missionaries arrive in Poland, first Communist Democratic Republic also grants entry to LDS missionaries as well as permitting its own citizens to serve foreign missions. Similar to Yugoslavia's nearly twenty years of unofficial practice, Czechoslovakia's Communist government also allows LDS missionaries in 1988, even though the church has no legal recognition there until 21 Feb. 1990 (after Czechoslovakia's democratization).
