(Zion's Camp) The group encamps on the banks of the Mississippi River and begins to cross it, which takes two days. During this time, Sylvester Smith complains bitterly about Joseph and his bulldog, finally stating, "If that dog bites me, I'll kill him." Joseph answers, "If you kill that dog, I'll whip you." Some brethren report that Sylvester and Joseph were about to start fighting until the brethren broke them up, and Brigham Young later reports that Joseph finally turned to the men and asked them if they were not ashamed of such an evil spirit, and said, "I am."
