Heber C. Kimball visits Joseph in Liberty jail. Joseph tells him to get the Saints away from Missouri as fast as possible. Joseph writes Emma from the jail describing his life "within the walls, grates, and screeking iron doors, of a lonesome, dark, dirty prison." He also advises Emma to be more gentle with the children: "don't be fractious to them, but listen to their wants."
