[Black History] Deseret News affirms Mormons are not abolitionists,
BR<>It is frequently asked, What is the reason of your being driven from place to place?....Were not your people abolitionists? They were not. Did they not spread an influence that slavery was not right? They said, as they say now, that slaves are, in many instances, abused, and that masters will be punished for abusing their slaves. (2)

[Mountain Meadows] George A. Smith, one of the twelve apostles in the LDS Church, begins drafting an apostolic report on the massacre. The report blames the emigrants for inciting Indians. It also places John Lee at the scene, thus identifying him as the best possible Mormon scapegoat for the crime. (Historian Juanita Brooks believes to be the person ultimately responsible for the massacre, having told Dame to issue the order that all the emigrants be killed.) (3)
