An order of $2,000. was also issued in favor of Heber J. Grant. Just before the late financial crisis in 1893, Brother Grant donated this amount in addition to some $5,000. or more, in favor of the Temple. Brother Grant gave his I.O.U. for this amount to Bishop [William B.] Preston and was credited on temple donation account. He became virtually bankrupt in consequence of the panic, on his representing to President Snow his inability to lift this obligation, and in view of the fact that he had already donated so liberally, President Snow forgave or cancelled the obligation; but as Bishop Preston had given Brother Grant credit for this amount this order is issued in favor of the Bishop's office to square his books.

The Pres[ident] observed Joseph Smith told him if he ever lifted his heel against the latter day saints he would never have the Presidential chair. [Vision of Ann Booth] I was informed of a remarkable vision of Sister Ann Booth which I have written on the following page. ...
A Remarkable Vision
I Ann Booth wife of Robert Booth of the Town of Manchester England had the following vision on the 12th Day of March in the year of our Lord 1840.
Being Carried away in a vision to the place of departed souls I saw {12} prision one above another vary large & builded of Soiled Stone. On ariving at the door of the uppermost prision, I beheld one of the 12 Apostles of the Lamb who had been martered in America Standing at the door of the prision holding a key with which he unlocked the door & went in & I followed him.
He appeared to be of a large size thick set, Dark hair Dark eyes & eyebrows of a smileing Countenance, & on his head was a Crown of Gold or sumthing brighter. He was Dressed in a long white robe with the sleeves plaited from the Sholder to the hand. Upon his breast were four stars + * * * apparrently like gold and a golden gridle about his loins. His feet were bear from above the ancles downwards, and his hands were also bear. As he entered the prision he seemed to stand about 3 feet from the floor (which was of Marble) as if the place was not worthy for him to stand upon. A vary brilient and glorious light Serrounded him while the rest of the Prision was dark. But his light was peculiar to himself & did not reflect upon others who were in the Prison who were surrounded with a gloom of darkness.
On the right hand near the door stood John Westley who on seeing the glorious Personage raised both hands & shouted Glory, honor, Praise, & Power be asscribed unto God & the Lamb forever & forever. Deliverance has Come. The Apostle then Commenced to Preach the Baptism of repentance for remission of Sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, when the hunderds of Prisoners gave a shout with a loud voice Saying Glory be to God forever & ever.
The marble floor was then removed & a river of water Clear as Cristle seemed to flow in its place. The Apostle then Called to John Westley by name who came forward quickley and both went down into the water & he Baptized him & coming up out of the water he laid hands on him for the gift of the Holy Ghost at the same time ordaining him to the Priesthood of Aaron.
The Apostle then retired to the place whare he stood at first and John Westley then proceded to Baptize A man by the name of Killham the leader of the New Connection of Methodist and next John Madison & then Scott, & John Tongue. The three latter were Methodist Preachers with whom I had formerly been acquainted. The next he Baptized was my Grandfather (Edmund Whitehead) & the next was my uncle (John Whitehead) & the next was my sister (Elizabeth Oiland) & next Joseph Lancashire & next Samuel Robinson & then next was my own Mother. All these had lived & died Methodist & I had been personally acquainted with them all. And after this he Baptized all the prisoners amounting to many hundreds.
After they were all Baptized the Apostle laid his hands on them & Confirmed them evry one. Then instantly the darkness dispersed & they were all Surrounded & envelloped in A Brilient light such as surrounded the Apostle at the first & they all lifted their voices with one accord giving glory to God for deliverance.
My Grandfather then Came to me & blessed me saying the Lord bless the forever & ever. Art thou come to see us deliverd? My mother then came to me & clasped me in her arms & kissed me three times & said the Lord Allmighty bless thee forever & ever.
I then awoke out of the Vision & felt so happy & overjoyed that I knew not how to remain in bed. But waking my husband we arose & taking the Bible I opened Providentially to the text Isaiah 24th they shall be gathered together &c. More & more astonished, I again opened the Bible to the 1st of St John The light shineth in darkness &c. And again the third time I opened it & immediately cast my eyes upon the 3d chapter of Peter 18, 19, 20 speaking of the spirits in Prison. Being before ignorant of these texts & opening upon each Providentially I was asstonished beyound measure.
I would further state that at the time I had this vision I had never herd of the Death of David W. Patten whom I have since learned was one of the Twelve Apostles of the Latter Day Saints in America & was slain in the late persecution in the fall of 1838. But in the Vision I knew it was an Apostle who had been slain in America.
Perhaps many will think lightly of this vision But I hereby Sollemnly testify that I actaully Saw & herd in a vision what I have here related & I give my name & set my seal in witness to the Same well knowing that I must stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ & answer for this Testimony.

Apparently some Saints were questioning the right of the Twelve to replace the wooden font which had been built under Joseph Smith's directions. In the Times and Seasons Brigham Young explained the reason for erecting the stone font and he wrote that the Saints should not wonder at the decision. Just because Joseph Smith had built, a wooden font did not mean that it should be permanent. He stated that he wanted a font that would not "stink" and take so much time in keeping it clean.

Apostle Parley P. Pratt, who had four wives at the time, writes to the MILLENIAL STAR warning English Mormons to "beware of seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils, as first introduced by John C. Bennett, under the name of 'spiritual wife' doctrine; and still agitated by the Pittsburg Seer, [Sidney Rigdon] and his followers under the same title." This is part of a pattern of false accusations against Sidney Rigdon who challenged the Apostles for leadership of the Church after Joseph's death. Rigdon had never advocated nor accepted polygamy.

[Hosea Stout] This day there was a grand concert for the Police at the Masonic Hallit commenced at ten oclock myself & wife & L. Fisher went we had also the 12 and other authorities with us, and was also provided with as much beer, wine, cakes &c as we could eat and drink. We had a very entertaining time all was peace, good feelings, and brotherly love no discord or contention among us. It lasted untill about 6 oclock P. M. when we dismissed I came home.

Joseph Smith arrived at Colesville, New York, about 25 June 1830 to baptize members of the Knight family and others on the following Sunday (27 June). However, baptisms were delayed a day when opponents destroyed the dam that had been constructed for this purpose. Moreover, Presbyterian minister John Sherer tried to prevent the baptism of one of his members, Emily Colburn. On 30 June, largely under the instigation of the Presbyterians, Smith was arrested by Constable Ebenezer Hatch for "disorderly conduct." On 1 July, Smith appeared before Justice Chamberlin for a pre-trial examination. Joseph Knight hired James Davidson and John Reed to defend Smith. While Smith claimed he was arrested "on a warrant, on charge of being a disorderly person; of setting the country in an uproar by preaching the Book of Mormon", more accurately, he was retried on the same charge he had narrowly escaped in March 1826. His preaching may have aroused his enemies, but it was not the legal basis for which he was arrested and examined. Joseph Knight remembered that he was arrested for "pertending to see under ground" and that his enemies had found "a little Clause ... in the [New] york Laws against such things." Reed added that his client had been arrested "for the crime of glass looking and juglin fortune telling and so on which the State of New York was against it and made it a crime and the crime was a fine and imprisonment". The warrant was initiated by Abram W. Benton, who wrote that during the 1830 trial "it was shown that the Book of Mormon was brought to light by the same magic power by which he [Smith] pretended to tell fortunes, discover hidden treasures, &c." According to Justice Noble, before whom Smith appeared the following day in Colesville, "Jo. plead in bar Statue of Limitations". Wesley P. Walters noted, "The law limited the time for prosecution of a misdemeanor to three years ..., while four had elapsed. The prosecution may have felt it still had a case since part of that time Joseph had been living in Harmony, Pa., and the law did not reckon the time spent outside the state as a part of the three year limitation". In other words, Benton and the others intended to finish the legal process begun in 1826 but not completed. Smith's defense proved successful. After the examination, which lasted an entire day, Smith was dismissed, then rearrested and taken to Colesville on the same charge. The trial was held on 2 July 1830 before Justice Noble, who also acquitted him. The following bill, submitted by Justice Chamberlin to the County Board of Supervisors for cases he examined or tried between 1 June and 20 October 1830, includes the first of Smith's two July 1830 court appearances.

[Franklin D. Richards] The question of what course to take in relation to plural marriage came up for serious consideration this afternoon. President [Wilford] Woodruff has felt very clear that no plural marriages shall be solemnized in the Territory. He has not felt very favorable to marriages being solemnized at all, but has consented to some few being performed in Mexico. Soon after I returned from Washington [D.C.], Brother Joseph F. Smith informed me of the danger there was of something being learned concerning marriages of this character being performed at El Paso. He said that the last few who had gone down there to meet Brother Macdonald had attracted considerable attention, and some of those who were of the party thought it exceedingly dangerous and were afraid that the knowledge of these transactions would come to light. The question had also arisen whether there is not danger of international complications arising over it. All these matters were carefullyconsidered, and we concluded that, for the present, there should be no more marriages of this character solemnized, unless the women who enter into this relation remain in Mexico and take up their abode there.
