Presidency re[s]cinded their decision on employing a gentile teacher in B[righam]. Y[oung]. A[cademy]. and telegraphed Bro[ther] [Benjamin] Cluff Provo [Utah]. The first Bro[ther] [George Q.] Cannon said to me was he felt that when the president of B[righam]. Y[oung]. A[cademy]. and Susie Y[oung]. G[ates]. one of the directors opposing Gentile teachers he did not feel to force them onto the academy. Bro[ther]. Jos[eph]. F. [Smith]said 'I made the [motion] in consequence of Pres[iden]t W[ilford Woodruff]'s remark but I felt just as Bro[ther] Brigham [Young Jr.] did. Pres[iden]t. W[oodruff]. made the remark that, he had expressed himself favorably because of Bro[ther]. Cannon remark that, these two branches of learning were among the most important in the acad[e]my but he felt just as Bro[ther] Young did all the time the subject was under consideration. I said, I feel like I ought to have y[ie]lded when Bro[ther]. Jos[eph]. F. motioned to make it unanimous, and let the responsibility rest where it ought to.
