The demolition begins of the old tabernacle at Coalville, Utah, formerly on the national register. Mormons and non-Mormons (primarily non-residents of Coalville) waged a court battle and petitioned the First Presidency not to destroy this meeting house now regarded as obsolete by church authorities. The First Presidency publishes a statement in defense of the demolition, which attracts enough attention to merit a feature story in the New York Times.
