Deseret News reports on "the first non-Mormon Fourth of July celebration ever attempted in Utah." Its editorial the next day comments: "The 'Mormons' of Salt Lake City have not celebrated Independence Day in this fashion for several years... When we can celebrate the day as freemen, as other citizens of our common country celebrate," Salt Lake City "will again come to the front with her popular displays of patriotism."
