... a similar recommendation [to merge the Church's various magazines] was considered by the First Presidency and the Twelve during the lifetime of President [George Q.] Cannon, upon which occasion this question was thoroughly considered. And without any reference whatever to the conclusions of a former council, the same decision was reached by ourselves yesterday, which was in effect against attempting to merge the publications mentioned into one magazine, and among other reasons adduced why this should not be done was this, that for us to surrender the fields already occupied by these publications would be tantamount to an invitation on our part for others to step in and start rival publications, a thing without doubt would be done.
