Apostle Reed Smoot is sworn in as member of U.S. Senate. Next Jan the Senate begins three-year hearings to decide if Smoot will be allowed to take his seat. Mormon church's continuing involvement with polygamy is emphasized in the hearing and many Church leaders are called to testify including President Joseph F. Smith. At the weekly meeting of the First Presidency and Apostles in the Salt Lake Temple Joseph F. Smith says after learning of protests against Smoot being seated, that "the activity of Satan and his hosts against us in the present case was only a further testimony to him of the divinity of Mormonism."
