In a meeting of the Twelve with Brigham Young's former counselors, Daniel H. Wells proposes that junior apostle Joseph F. Smith should become the church president. Wells denies that Young ever intended for John Taylor to succeed him as church president. This is the first time a general authority proposes ending the automatic succession of the senior apostle. In 1880 Wells and Apostle Orson Pratt again urge this. In 1887 Apostle Heber J. Grant wants lower-ranked apostle Joseph F. Smith to become church president instead of Wilford Woodruff or four other senior apostles.
