At 2 PM conference continued. ... The Authorities of the Church were then sustained. ... Joseph McMurrin was sustained to fill the Vacancy in the 1st Council of Seventy, caused by the death of Bro[ther] [Edward] Stevenson. ... The bretheren of the Authorities did not give us any chance to select anyone, neither did they inform our council, until it was made known to the people. There was great surprise in the persons chosen as Apostles. I know not the reasons, only that Gods ways are not as mans. Believe the bretheren feel that if they are not represented while living, they may not be after they are dead. I shall try to accept of whatever comes along, although it is hard to see why men who have been tried and tested are passed by.
